Lily Small (LAS) is an American-Italian photographer and illustrator who is currently living and working in Wales.
Although I have been drawing for as long as I’ve been old enough to hold a pencil, for the past two years in my artistic studies and career, I have specialized in the medium of photography. My development as an artist has taken place over the course of my entire life, I only knew the very basics of the art; but after a bit of daring and the necessary artistic and educational freedom, I have been able to elevate my skills as an artist to become who I am today. I have experimented with different methods and techniques in variety of mediums including print making, dark room photography and digital media in order to broaden my horizons of both my art and art history practice. I received my BA and MA from Aberystwyth University in Art and Art History, specializing in digital art and practices.
In my fine art work I aim to deal with topics that have been important to me such as trans and non-binary representation, gender identity and identity politics. I enjoy capturing people and their diversity, representing the unrepresented and the misunderstood and giving them a place to show their beauty and worth. In my projects I aim to challenge the binaries and limitations of contemporary society that we continually reconstruct between Self and Other, between our own true and the perceived selves which often do not correspond.
Over the past few years, I have been able to develop a business sense as well. I have worked in the fashion industry assisting photographers at several Paris runway shows. I have also self-directed photographic projects with professional models for use in promotional materials for an Italian fashion company and have worked taking and editing photos for use in retail storybooks. Currently I am employed as a product photographer for a specialty online retail site. I have been fortunate enough to have discovered my true calling in life, a discovery that now propels me to continue to create new things every day.
